You have finally taken the step to start your own business, or you may want to refresh your current website. You want to be traceable online, you want to showcase a cool business card, but you don't know what to take into account yet. There are countless possibilities online, which may cause discouragement. In this article we give you 6 useful tips that you should take into account when you’re having a website built. That way you know what to expect!

1. Choose an obvious domain name

This may be a very obvious tip, but that doesn't make it any less important to be mentioned. Check in advance whether your desired domain name is still available to avoid disappointment. Also make sure that you have spelled your domain name correctly. It would be a shame if you bought a domain name with the wrong spelling. Tip: do not use punctuation marks in the domain name. Is your domain available? Then buy it. Do you also have an old domain name. Don't forget to create a redirect to the new or the correct domain.

2. Be critical of the design

Your website is actually your online business card. So it is important that all details are correct, because you want to make a good first impression. Determine in advance what your corporate identity colors are and how you would like the lay-out to be. Are you not that creative? Then have your website designed by a professional. The look and feel of the website is of course very important, because that is the first thing your potential customer sees.

3. Provide optimal Usablity / Candidate Experience

Of course you have a certain idea of what your website will look like, but does it navigate nicely or do you need to make some adjustments? It’s always important to take into account the usability of a website, or the user friendliness. A website must be pleasant to scroll through and buttons must be in the right places. It is of course not the intention that a website visitor first has to click on 10 different buttons to get to the contact form. This way you will also lose a lot of website visitors, including potential customers. For more information, read our blog about online candidate experience.

4. Go for responsive websites

In these times full of IPads, mobile phones and laptops, it is important that your website works on all devices. Responsiveness basically means that your website is compatible with different devices. The website will resize when you use it on different devices. This way your website will always look good and can be used on different devices. Since the vast majority of traffic takes place via a mobile device, you should not forget to fully test your new website on such a device. Try applying as a candidate on your own mobile phone. Is the application form properly aligned?

5. Select the CMS in advance

You may want to maintain your website content in an easy-to-use system. After all, you want to stay up-to-date for your potential customers. Website visitors drop out fairly quickly if there is outdated information on a website. A Content Management System (CMS) actually gives away a quite bit of what it does. In such a system you can easily manage, maintain and adjust your content. If you have a website built, it often comes with a CMS. OTYS Websites for instance come with the OTYS CMS, Wordpress sites also have one of their own. It may be that you have a website designed via an external agency. In that case make sure that you have at least thought about the CMS.
