We were often asked by customers how to install Google Analytics in the OTYS CMS. Especially since the new Google Analytics can also be installed. In this blog I will explain how you can do this. I will explain it for both Google Universal Analytics (old Google Analytics) and Google Analytics 4 (new Google Analytics) And there’s a bonus: I will also make an instructional video of Google Analytics 4, so that you can see exactly how it should be done!
Watch the instructions via a video here.
Hoe Installing Google Analytics can be done in 3 easy steps!
Once you know how to install Google Analytics via OTYS, it is actually very easy. In this blog we assume that you have already created a Google Analytics account. If you don't have a Google Analytics account yet, this blog can help you with that. Now I will take you through the 3 steps:
Step 1: Choose the correct property in Google Analytics
Step 1 is to log in to Google Analytics and choose the correct property. Click on your company name at the top left next to the Google Analytics logo and check whether you have selected the correct one. If you have already installed Google Analytics 4, you will probably see two different properties under “property and apps”. Suppose you do not know which of the two is Google Universal Analytics or which is Google Analytics 4, you can recognize it by the code under the property name. If the code starts with “UA” it is Google Universal Analytics, where “UA” is the abbreviation. Or click on one of the properties, you will see that the interface is different. Google Analytics 4 has a completely new interface.
Step 2: Copy your Google Analytics Tracking Tag
Step 2 is to copy the Google Analytics tag. The Google Analytics tag of Google Universal Analytics can be found in a different place than the tag of Google Analytics 4, so I will now split these two.
- Google Universal Analytics
To be able to copy the tag you must first go to administrator, you can recognize this by the gear wheel and it is located at the bottom left of the interface. Now you can see three different columns. We are now going to look at the middle column called “property”. That column contains the heading “tracking info”, click on it. If you have clicked on this, a number of other options will appear, click on “tracking code”. The screenshot below shows where to find this.
Once you have clicked on this, the code will appear immediately. All you need to do for this step is to copy the tag. You can do this by selecting and copying the tag, see the screenshot below.
- Google Analytics 4
Just like with Google Universal Analytics, you also have to click on the gear at the bottom left to go to administrator. Instead of three columns, you now see two columns. Again, we will look at the property column (second column). Click on “data streams”.
Then click on the bar where in this case it says “OTYS France - GA4”. A new screen will open. Then click on the arrow of “Global site tag (gtag.js)” and you will now see the Google Analytics tag appear. You must also copy this code again. You can do this by right-clicking on the copy icon or by selecting and copying the tag. The screenshot below provides a little more clarity.
Step 3: Paste your Tracking Tag In OTYS
Step 3 is pasting the code into the OTYS CMS. This step is again the same for both Google Universal Analytics and Google Analytics 4. Login to OTYS Go and go to the CMS module. When you are in the CMS, click on the tab “SEO & META tags” on the left and then click on Google Analytics. Here you paste the code you just copied. The Google Universal Analytics tag may already be here. Then you can just add an "enter" once to get a new row and paste the code from Google Analytics 4 under the other code. All you have to do now is click save, and you're done!
